Making informed decisions means finding and understanding the relevant information, taking an opportunity to discuss it, and make the decision that suits you and your family. It is best if you can make these decisions before your child so that they also learn taking informed decisions.

Now, I will take you on to my own childhood story to differentiate Informed decisions vs Cowardice in decision making. As a young boy, I used to have very strong 6th sense. My parents and their friends and relatives discovered this. And the news spread very quickly.

Everyone who had something important to be achieved would bribe me with a chocolate and ask me about the possibility of success. At one point I too realized that I have this especial power, which resulted in me becoming a bit arrogant. I started showing off my skill every time someone asked me any such questions.

One day afternoon at grandparents place I was asked, when will Dinesh, my cousin come back from NCC camp. I like a big showman stood there, straightened my collars and said after 15 days. And even before I finished my statement, I saw a cycle rickshaw stopping in front of the house and Dinesh in his NCC attire had arrived. My predictions went wrong. Every one in the room laughed. I ran out. This happens when we fail to take informed decisions.

And at that moment I made up my mind that I will henceforth never say or do anything without being fully informed. That is where I started to take informed decisions. That was the only way I could hide my failure and assure success in future.

So even in my college every time we were given an assignment, I would go around the class, see what everyone is doing and only then I would come up with my solutions.

It did produce some wonderful results for me. For example, I was the first person in the class to receive National Scholarship. The first in the history of the college to earn Rs. 3000 plus accommodation during my diploma project etc. So, I found that informed decisions are the key to success in life.

Yet as years passed, I realized that the gap between where I wanted to be and where I was in my life was widening at an alarming rate. Many years later while coaching, I realized the connection between that incident in the childhood and the widening gap. While I grew up thinking to take informed decisions was the right choice; I had stopped taking instant and firm decisions.

That slowly resulted in delays and procrastination. And I wasn’t even aware of that. To cut the story short the moment I got present to my life pattern, I had a choice to drop that pattern instantly. In that one day, I could transact the business of Rs. 2, 25, 000/-

I still take informed decisions but don’t procrastinate.
