Karva Chauth is a one-day festival celebrated by Hindu women in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. In present days, groups of unmarried women sometimes keep the fast out of a sense of friendship.

In India, Karva Chauth is traditionally celebrated in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana.The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon, in the month of Kartik.

Story of Satyavan and Savitri

When Lord Yama came to procure Satyavan’s soul — husband of Savitri, Savitri begged Lord Yama to grant a life for her husband. When Lord Yama declined, she stopped eating and drinking. Savitri followed Lord Yama who carried away her dead husband. Finally, Lord Yama said that she could ask for any other boon except for the life of her husband. Savitri asked that she be blessed with children. Yama agreed. Being a devoted wife, Savitri would never let any other man be the father of her children. Yama was left with no other choice but to restore Savitri’s husband to life.

The Story of Queen Veervati

There was a queen named Veervati. She was the only sister of seven loving brothers. She was married to a king. On her first Karva Chauth, she went to her parent’s home to observe the fast. She began a strict fast after the sunrise, but by evening, was desperately waiting for the moonrise as she suffered severe thirst and hunger. Her seven brothers couldn’t bear to see their sister in such distress. They planned to trick her by reflecting a mirror through the peepal leaves that made it look as though the moon had risen.

As soon as Veeravati saw the light, she believed it was the moon and broke her fast. The moment she broke her fast, word arrived that her husband, the king, was dead. she wept through the night until her pain compelled a Goddess to appear and ask why she cried. When the queen explained her distress, the Goddess revealed how she had been tricked by her brothers. The queen asked for forgiveness. Goddess blessed with a boon that her king would be alive if only she could keep Karva Chauth again, following all the rituals. Veeravati agreed and followed the orders, which revived her husband.

Tips to follow for Fasting

1. Drink lots of water and eat well before you begin your fast. Eat seasonal fruits like banana, papaya and apples.
2. You could also eat dry fruits like walnuts, almond and pistachios.
3. It is recommended not to fast if you are taking medication related to health problems.
4. Avoid tough physical activities while fasting.
5. Break you fast by drinking a glass of water and then munch on a few nuts.
6. Strictly avoid having tea or coffee to break your fast, which might aggravate acidity levels in your body.
