In the maths period in 3rd standard, teacher ask, “Rahul, stand up and tell me, if I give you an apple, and then I give you one more apple and after that one more apple, how many apples will you have?”
Little Rahul stood up, thought for a while and said, “four”.
The whole class started laughing. Teacher is appalled. He repeated the question again over and little Rahul again said, “four”.
Then teacher changed the question slightly, instead of apples, he said, “If I give you a mango, and then one more mango and one more mango; then how many mangoes will you have?”
Little Rahul thought for a while and replied, “Three”.
“Good”. Teacher was happy. “Now listen to me clearly. If I gave you an apple, then one more apple and one more apple; how many apples will you have?”
Little Rahul thought for some time and said, “Four”.
The whole class burst out in laughing. Teacher was really angry. He shouted, “Are you making a Fool of Me?”
The little Rahul started trembling with fear. The same question was repeated with mangoes, and answer was right. But with apples, he kept on saying, “Four”.
The teacher was really furious. He almost shook the hell out of little Rahul.
Finally the nervous Rahul said, “My mummy has given me an apple for lunch, so I already have one apple.”
Well, the mystery was solved, but by then the damage in the relationship between Rahul and teacher was already done.
In life too, if you simply take care of finding out about the other’s viewpoint and reasons behind their views, without insisting on only your viewpoint; you could save that relationship from getting damaged.
Think about it.
