What is the real meaning of life?
Once a man approached Buddha and asked him, “Is it true that there’sno soul?”
“Yes. It is.” answered Buddha.
Few days later, another person asked Buddha, “I have heard that in every one of us resides the Soul. Is it true?”
“Yes, it’s true.” answered Buddha.
Ananda the disciple of Buddha was witness to both occasions. He was surprised to hear the contradictory replies from Buddha. But he kept quite.
Next day again another person asked Buddha, “I believe that it’s not certain that Soul really exists.”
“Yes, you’re right” said Buddha.
By now Ananda was really perplexed. After the man left, he asked Buddha, “Why did you give three different answers to the same question. “
“That’s because they were not ready to for the truth.” answered the Buddha quietly.
What happens when you get answers contrary to your beliefs? You simply reject it and go back to your contradictory belief pattern.
Very few, the rare few, bare themselves to reflect on the new answers to arrive at deeper insight.
Do we not tell our children that they were the gift from God rather than saying that they were born out of a sexual act? And, later when they grow up, do we not give them the real answers?
Why? Because we care about them. We care about what and how much they can handle. Not everyone is ready to hear the truth, let alone practice it.
Physical age or bookish knowledge has no correlation to one’s readiness. If you are willing to listen, nature is ceaselessly offering answers to your questions.
The appeal of an answer is not dependent on the answer itself but on the mindset of the questioner.
Similarly the meaning of life is not so much about the meaning itself as much as it’s about the one on the quest for it.
