Fate vs. Freewill: How to fulfill your Life’s Purpose
At least once a day I say, “Everything happens for a reason.” Is there a reason for everything? and if so, what it is?
For centuries, philosophers and religious people have been debating on this. In my own life, I strongly believe both Fate and Freewill are guiding me. The following story captures my belief beautifully.
The old man and the storm. Once an old man dreamt that a storm would come and wipe away his village, but God would protect him. Sure enough, the next day a terrible storm came.
On the first day, the old man’s brother came and warned him to get out of the village straight away. The old man refused, knowing that God would protect him.
Next day, a neighbor came through. He was fleeing with his family and offered to take the old man along with them. The old man denied this help too.
On the third day, the old man took to his roof as the storm water raged below. A group of villagers came by on a boat and offered to take him to a safer place. Again, the old man refused knowing that God had promised to protect him.
Soon after the situation grew worse, the old man drowned and died. In the heaven, he asked God, “Why didn’t you help me as promised?”
God replied, “I sent your brother, your neighbor, and even a boat. However, you declined my help each time.”
(Can you read between these lines?)
This shows that life is a combination of Fate and Freewill. While, Fate maybe present in your life, ultimately you must utilise your own Freewill and work to fulfill your potential.
Use these four pointers to fulfill your potential through Fate:
- Look for signs. Have you ever had a gut feeling about something? That gut feeling is your intuition speaking to you. Too often, people ignore their intuition and that’s a grave mistake.
You must acknowledge those signs, accept them and take inspired actions. - Follow your passion. Fulfilling your Life’s Purpose simply means, living your passion. Align your career, hobbies, free time, the people around you etc. with your passion. The more you live your passion, the closer you will come to reaching your destiny.
- Have unwavering faith. Faith is knowing and believing in something even if you are unable to see it now. For example, I have never seen a million dollars, but I know it exists.
Faith will carry your day through entire life — in good times and bad times too. - Work for your Life’s Purpose. Whether it’s Fate or Freewill that is guiding you, you must put in the needed work to fulfill your potential. There are no shortcuts in life and no magic bullets. Accomplishments and greatness are the direct results of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. The smarter and harder you work, the luckier you get. It’s no coincidence.
